The Seven Last Words of Jesus
Once again we set out on this time of penitential pilgrimage, fully aware of the mercy of God for us all. We trun again to God, confessing our sinfulness, and receiving again the new life of Easter. Jesus is the Word made flesh. In the final hours of his life he spoke Seven Last Words:1. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do; 2. Today you will be with me in paradise; 3. Woman, behold they son! Son, behold, they mother!; 4. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?; 5. I thirst; 6. It is finished; 7. Father, into they hands I commend my spirit. Reflecting on the Seven Last Words of Jesus might at first seem a rather gloomy or mournful thing to do but this is to misunderstand the meaning of the cross. The day of Jesus' death is named 'Good Friday' and words spoken by him are good. The late Cardinal Basil Hume said: 'There is no Good Friday experience that does not lead to a greater understanding of sharing in the joys and triumphs of Easter Sunday.' This Lent our hearts' desire is to glory in the cross of Jesus. In doing so we find a strange joy knowing that this dreadful suffering will bring healing to the world. The word of the cross itself is the message of God's love - the message that to live we must die to self and to flourish we must take up our own cross daily and follow Jesus.
